Senator Marco Rubio spoke candidly on recent foreign policy challenges, highlighting Venezuela under Nicolás Maduro while underscoring President Donald Trump’s unique ability to engage world leaders directly. During a discussion with Sean Hannity, Rubio noted that while the U.S. should always pursue diplomacy, Maduro has a long history of breaking agreements that complicates efforts to stabilize the region.
Rubio outlined several examples, noting that over the past decade, Maduro has made five separate deals with different parties and failed to honor any of them. The Biden administration, Rubio emphasized, also attempted negotiations with Maduro, who demanded the release of his convicted nephews and his chief money launderer in exchange for free and fair elections—a promise he ultimately never fulfilled. “They stole the elections. They suckered Joe Biden. They’re not going to sucker Donald Trump,” Rubio asserted.
Despite these challenges, Rubio praised Trump’s willingness to engage globally, citing his meetings with leaders such as the President of Syria, Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, and Kim Jong Un. “The president is unique in modern American history. He’s prepared to sit down and talk with anyone,” Rubio said, noting that this flexibility is crucial to protecting U.S. interests while seeking stability in volatile regions.
Rubio also stressed the strategic importance of Venezuela: the country should no longer serve as a base for Iranian influence, a source of drug trafficking, or a conduit for organized crime groups entering the United States. While Maduro has shown he cannot reliably honor agreements, Rubio emphasized that this does not mean the U.S. should avoid trying, especially under a president capable of negotiating from a position of strength and demanding accountability.
Ultimately, Rubio framed Trump’s approach as a combination of pragmatic engagement and American-first strategy, ensuring that the U.S. seeks peace and stability globally while holding foreign leaders accountable for their promises.
