Spokane Wildfire Destroys 15 Homes, Possible Death After Resident Refused to Evacuate
A fast-moving wildfire tore through a Spokane County, Washington neighborhood this week, destroying at least 15 homes and forcing roughly 12,000 residents to evacuate under emergency orders. The Upriver Fire broke out near the Beacon Hill area on June 16 and quickly spread into nearby subdivisions as high winds pushed flames toward densely populated streets. The Spokane County Sheriff's Office said deputies and firefighters went door to door warning residents to leave immediately, in some cases knocking and announcing themselves at homes already surrounded by fire.
Authorities say they discovered what appear to be human remains inside one of the destroyed homes, belonging to a resident who had reportedly refused to evacuate despite a Level 3 "Go Now" evacuation order. According to the sheriff's office, a family member requested a welfare check Tuesday evening after being unable to reach the resident. Deputies arrived to find the home already engulfed and conditions too dangerous to search further; investigators were able to enter the property the following day, where the remains were located and turned over to the Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office to confirm identity and cause of death. Sheriff John Nowels said the case underscores how critical it is for residents to comply with evacuation orders when lives are at stake.
