Firefighters Battle Rare ‘Fire Tornado’ in Turkey Amid Massive Blaze
TURKEY — Firefighters in Turkey faced a rare and dangerous phenomenon as they attempted to contain a large wildfire that produced a dramatic ‘fire tornado’—a spinning vortex of flame and smoke reaching high into the sky.
Video from the scene shows plumes of thick smoke spiraling upward, forming a towering funnel of fire as emergency crews battled the intense blaze. Firefighters could be seen spraying water hoses directly at the fiery vortex, trying to suppress its spread and protect nearby areas from catching fire.
Known scientifically as a fire whirl or fire devil, the phenomenon occurs when intense heat and turbulent winds combine, creating a swirling column of flame. These fire tornadoes are extremely dangerous and unpredictable, often moving quickly and igniting anything in their path.
