Armenia Trains With Iranian Missiles in Bold Defense Expansion Move
Armenia’s Defense Minister Suren Papikyan released video footage on Sunday showing Armenian air defense troops conducting intensive training with newly acquired surface-to-air missile systems from Iran and India. The exercises featured the Iranian short-range Majid system, known locally as “Karich” or “Scorpion,” alongside India’s medium-range Akash system, redesignated “Lusan” or “Lynx” in Armenian service. The drills demonstrate Yerevan’s push to modernize its air defenses and reduce reliance on traditional suppliers. Personnel practiced operational procedures with both platforms under field conditions.
The acquisition of the Iranian Majid system marks a notable expansion of defense cooperation between Armenia and Tehran. Officials in Yerevan have framed the purchases as part of a broader strategy to diversify military partnerships and strengthen bilateral security ties with Iran. The short-range Iranian system is designed to counter low-flying aircraft, helicopters, drones, and similar threats, while the Indian Akash provides medium-range coverage. Together, the systems add new layers to Armenia’s air defense network.
This development comes as Armenia continues to reshape its military procurement after setbacks in previous regional conflicts.
