The Israel Defense Forces and Israel Security Agency say newly released intelligence indicates that Hamas used Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis for interrogations, torture and extortion of Gaza residents. According to the Israeli security agencies, Hamas maintained a permanent presence inside the hospital complex while using areas intended for medical services for activities unrelated to patient care. The allegations add another disturbing layer to Israel’s long-running claims that Hamas has embedded military and security infrastructure inside civilian facilities.
The intelligence cited by the IDF identifies the hospital’s “Yassin” building as a location where Hamas Internal Security Forces and military intelligence allegedly conducted interrogations. Israeli officials say the activity took place on the second floor of the outpatient clinics, turning part of the medical complex into what they describe as a security and interrogation facility. If independently substantiated, the allegation would raise serious concerns about the exploitation of a functioning hospital for coercive activities against civilians.
The latest disclosure follows previous Israeli claims that Nasser Hospital was used by Hamas for command-and-control activity and other military purposes. The IDF has previously said that Hamas operatives operated from the hospital and that weapons and other evidence were found during Israeli operations there. The military has repeatedly argued that such activity places patients, doctors and other civilians in danger by making a medical facility part of a broader conflict zone.
The allegations also intensify the debate over Hamas’s use of civilian infrastructure during the war. The IDF says using hospitals for military and security operations violates international law and puts Gaza’s civilian population at greater risk, while allegations of this kind require careful scrutiny because much of the underlying intelligence is not publicly available for independent verification. The revelation therefore raises a major question: if hospitals are being used not only as command centers but also for interrogations and coercion, how extensive is Hamas’s presence inside Gaza’s remaining medical facilities?
