Chile couldn't look away on October 6, 2026, as a stray dog named Morocho found himself stranded on a concrete structure in the middle of the swollen Mapocho River in Santiago, battered by heavy rains that had sent the water surging. Firefighters, the Carabineros' elite GOPE police unit, and municipal teams all raced to the scene, and the rescue was even broadcast live on television as the hours dragged on. One man waded into the river to reach him but was pushed back by the current, and a rope-based attempt also failed. Then the unthinkable happened: Morocho lost his footing and was dragged several meters downstream by the powerful flow, leaving onlookers in tears and fearing the worst.
Against all odds, the roughly two-year-old dog kept his head above water, fought his way to a calmer stretch, and climbed out of the river by himself, to cheers and applause from the crowd. He was taken to the Santiago Municipal Veterinary Clinic, where vets found him hydrated, in generally good shape, and suffering only minor injuries. Morocho wasn't the only survivor of the day, as another dog, Lulú, was pulled to safety with a harness system earlier in the operation. The city of Santiago has since welcomed Morocho as its official pet ambassador to promote animal adoption, though the decision has divided social media, with some users arguing a dog this young deserves a stable family home rather than a municipal title.
