Jordan's King Abdullah II used his platform at the United Nations this week to deliver a sharp warning about what he called a dangerous pattern of Israeli expansion, singling out southern Syria as the clearest proof. This Israeli government's appetite, he told the General Assembly, is now a regional threat, and Syria is the warning sign the world keeps ignoring. He described a steady drumbeat of incursions, new military positions, and creeping territorial moves near the Syrian border, including areas close to vital water resources that directly touch Jordan's own security. According to the King, it is happening step by calculated step, with Israel testing how far it can go each time the world simply looks the other way.

The remarks land against the backdrop of a rapidly changing southern Syria, where Israeli forces have carried out more than 1,000 documented incursions into Quneitra and Daraa provinces since the fall of Syria's Baathist government in late 2024, setting up buffer zones and fortified positions the Israeli side says are meant to counter jihadist threats near its border. Jordan, which shares a border with that same stretch of southern Syria, has repeatedly argued these moves violate the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and pose a direct risk to its own northern security. King Abdullah's message to fellow leaders was blunt, every time the international community stays silent, he warned, Israel learns it can push even further across borderlines and legal limits, leaving Amman increasingly anxious about what comes next along its frontier.
