The Pentagon has quietly pulled every single B-1 bomber out of RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, England, in a hasty departure that unfolded over the course of a single day on October 4. A Pentagon spokesperson confirmed that all bombers deployed to the base have redeployed to their home stations in the United States, following weeks of mounting security concerns. The withdrawal comes just over a week after a September 27 incident in which suspicious vehicles were spotted near the airfield, leading to the arrest of five men and, later, a dual British-Iranian national as investigators dug deeper. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there were strong indications that Iran was behind the threat, while US officials pointed to fresh intelligence, reportedly shared by Israel, warning of a possible attack on the base.

RAF Fairford had served as a critical forward operating hub for American bombers throughout the war against Iran, which began on February 28, cutting dramatically the flight time needed to strike targets inside Iranian territory. At the height of operations, as many as two dozen bombers were stationed there at once, including roughly 18 B-1Bs and half a dozen B-52s, though the B-52s had already left months earlier as fighting cooled following an April ceasefire. Despite the dramatic optics of the withdrawal, US officials stressed that American bombers remain capable of striking targets worldwide directly from bases in the continental United States, a capability demonstrated repeatedly during the conflict's peak. Secretary of State Marco Rubio downplayed any direct link to the Iranian threat, calling the movement part of regular rotations, even as officials say UK bases could see new carrier strike group activity by late October.
