US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz drove home the international community's long history of opposing Iran's nuclear ambitions, stating plainly, "There has been not one, not two, but seven UN Security Council resolutions over the last 20 years saying Iran cannot, should not, and will not have a nuclear weapons program." The figure checks out against the historical record: the Security Council adopted seven resolutions targeting Iran's nuclear program between 2006 and 2015, including Resolution 1696 that first demanded Tehran suspend uranium enrichment, several follow-up measures like 1737, 1747, 1803, 1835, and 1929 that tightened sanctions and restrictions, and Resolution 2231, which endorsed the 2015 nuclear deal and its associated limits. Waltz's comments arrive as tensions with Iran remain at a boiling point following the IAEA board's decision earlier this month to refer Iran to the Security Council, the first such referral in 20 years, over Tehran's failure to cooperate with a long-running probe into undeclared uranium traces.

That IAEA referral, backed by the US, UK, France, and Germany, passed by a wide margin despite opposition from Russia, China, and Niger, though any resulting sanctions would still require clearing the veto power those same allies hold at the Security Council. Inspectors say they have not had reliable access to Iran's key nuclear sites since the 12-day Israeli-US war on Iran erupted in mid-2025, with further strikes hitting nuclear facilities again earlier this year. The IAEA has also flagged that Iran holds hundreds of kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent purity, edging close to weapons-grade levels, deepening international alarm even as Tehran insists the referral is a politically motivated maneuver with no legal basis. Waltz's comments frame the current standoff not as a new demand from Washington alone, but as the latest chapter in a two-decade international consensus that Iran must not be allowed to cross the nuclear threshold.
