US-based defense startup AG3 Labs has demonstrated a new modular launch system called RACK, designed to deploy first-person-view drones directly from vehicle-mounted pods. The system is built as a ruggedized transport and rapid-launch unit, essentially a containerized pod that packages drones, launch hardware, and batteries into a single deployable package that can be mounted on different platforms rather than tied to one specific vehicle. According to the company, each RACK module can hold up to five FPV drones, giving operators a compact, self-contained way to carry and launch a small swarm without needing separate storage and launch equipment. The pitch is straightforward: open the lid, and the drones are ready to go, cutting down on setup time in the field.

The demonstration itself showed just how flexible that mounting concept is meant to be. RACK modules were integrated onto two very different unmanned ground platforms, the AZAK S26, a wheeled unmanned ground vehicle built by AZAK using a distinctive design that places all of a wheel's drive components, motor, battery, controls, and braking, inside the wheel itself, and the ULTRA unmanned ground platform developed by Overland AI. Footage from the demonstration reportedly shows two RACK modules in action across these platforms, suggesting the company was testing not just whether the system could be mounted, but how it performs once actually integrated onto vehicles with very different mobility designs. Pairing the launch pods with ground vehicles rather than aircraft or fixed installations points toward a specific use case: giving ground forces a mobile, self-sufficient way to launch drone swarms without relying on separate air-launch infrastructure.

AG3 Labs, a startup that grew out of Michigan State University, has built its broader product line around the idea of affordable, attritable drone systems meant to be flown, potentially destroyed in training or combat scenarios, and quickly replaced like ammunition rather than treated as expensive, irreplaceable assets. The company's product ecosystem includes software for mission command and swarm coordination, along with mesh-networking hardware that can bring third-party drones onto the same operational network. That context matters for understanding RACK's role, since the launch module isn't meant to function in isolation; it fits into a broader system where multiple drones, ground platforms, and control software are designed to work together under a single coordinated command structure. The company has already secured a ten-year master business agreement for direct procurement access to Department of Defense customers, and its systems have reportedly been demonstrated at one of the largest National Guard-led joint exercises held within the continental United States.

This kind of vehicle-mounted, rapid-launch drone concept reflects a broader shift happening across defense technology, where ground robots are increasingly being treated as mobile platforms for deploying aerial systems rather than purely standalone tools. Other defense contractors and military branches have been experimenting with similar ground-to-air integration concepts recently, including tests pairing armored combat vehicles with swarms of smaller ground robots. Whether RACK moves from demonstration to widespread deployment will likely depend on how well it performs across a wider range of vehicles and combat conditions beyond the two platforms shown in this latest test. For now, the demonstration marks a notable step in AG3 Labs' effort to position its modular launch technology as adaptable infrastructure that can ride along on whatever ground vehicle a given mission requires.
