BORDER SHOW OF FORCE: North Korea Displays South-Facing Self-Propelled Howitzers Near South Korean Border

North Korea has displayed 122-millimeter self-propelled howitzers near its heavily militarized border with South Korea, with the weaponsโ€™ barrels reportedly pointed south, according to reports by South Korean media and Reuters. Photographs taken by Yonhap News Agency from the Aegibong Observatory in Gimpo on October 25 showed a howitzer along the coast of Kaepung County, approximately 1.5 kilometers away, with North Korean soldiers drilling nearby. A Reuters witness subsequently observed three North Korean armored vehicles with their barrels facing south and between 20 and 30 soldiers carrying out fencing work inside the Demilitarized Zone. Yonhap identified the vehicles as 122mm self-propelled howitzers, which reportedly have an estimated range of 15 to 24 kilometers, and described their visible deployment as unusual. There were no reports of the weapons being fired, and the available accounts did not indicate that North Korean forces had launched a new advance toward the South Korean border.

The display comes amid renewed tensions between the two Koreas over a disputed landmine incident in September. Pyongyang reportedly sent a letter to the United Nations Security Council accusing South Korea of fabricating the incident and warning that it could take self-defense measures. On October 23, Seoul proposed military talks aimed at preventing accidental clashes, but North Korea had issued no publicly reported response at the time of the account. Analysts in Seoul interpreted the visible artillery as a deliberate show of force intended to increase pressure on South Korea, although the weaponsโ€™ appearance alone does not establish that an attack is imminent. The situation highlights the continuing military and diplomatic friction between the neighboring countries, where heavily armed forces operate in close proximity and miscalculations could carry serious consequences. Whether Pyongyang will respond to Seoulโ€™s proposal for talks remains an important question as both sides navigate the latest confrontation.
