The USS Abraham Lincoln sailed back into San Diego Bay on October 8, ending a grueling 321-day deployment that became one of the longest and most intense combat tours for a U.S. aircraft carrier since Vietnam. For 265 consecutive days at sea, without a single port call, the Lincoln and its strike group flew nearly 3,700 combat missions as part of Operation Epic Fury, fired roughly 450 Tomahawk missiles, and were credited with sinking dozens of Iranian naval vessels during the ongoing U.S.-Israel war against Iran. Sailors in dress whites lined the rails as tugboats guided the massive carrier into port, while thousands of family members packed the pier, many meeting babies born during the deployment for the first time. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth flew out to the ship the day before to personally award the crew a Presidential Unit Citation, one of the military's highest honors for sustained combat performance.

The homecoming comes after months of scrutiny over conditions aboard the Lincoln, with lawmakers and families raising alarms about food shortages, plumbing failures, and crew mental health during the extended stretch at sea, concerns the Navy and Pentagon officials pushed back on as exaggerated or false. Relief finally came in August when the USS George Washington, normally based in Asia, arrived in the Middle East to take over watch duties, freeing the Lincoln to begin its long journey home. For the sailors now reunited with loved ones on the pier, the deployment represents both a record-setting military achievement and a deeply personal toll, one the Navy says it is reviewing as it weighs how to prevent future crews from enduring such an extended stretch away from home.
