A funeral in western Jordan turned into a scene of terror on Friday when three gunmen opened fire on a procession in front of a church in al-Karak. According to Jordanian reports, six people were killed and 28 were wounded. The shooting took place at Hamoud Church in Karak governorate, where witnesses told state-owned Al-Mamlaka that the attackers arrived by vehicle and fired rifles and pistols for several minutes before fleeing. State TV has since aired CCTV footage of the attack, and security forces have launched a manhunt for the shooters.
The attack is a rare and deeply unsettling event for Jordan, a country long seen as stable in a turbulent region and home to a Christian minority in Karak. Officials have condemned the shooting as heinous, but no group has claimed responsibility, no arrests have been announced, and no motive has been confirmed. Early reports varied on the toll, with some outlets reporting seven dead and about ten wounded, and accounts differed on whether the gunmen entered the church or fired at people around it. Those details may change as investigators piece together what happened and who was behind it.
