U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee is back with one of his hardest-hitting claims yet about Tehran, declaring that the Iranian regime wants to kill everybody who refuses to accept Shia law, which he describes as Sharia law. It is a sweeping statement, and it is his own characterization of the regime's intentions, not a finding backed by any official U.S. report. Still, Huckabee is framing it as the heart of the danger coming out of Iran, a threat he says goes far beyond politics and into the regime's religious ideology. The remark lands at a moment when Washington, Jerusalem, and Tehran are locked in some of the most tense exchanges seen in years.
Huckabee is hardly a newcomer to this fight. A former Arkansas governor, longtime Iran critic, and outspoken evangelical supporter of Israel, he has repeatedly pointed the finger at Tehran for bankrolling and arming Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis, once saying it is better to burn the whole kitchen down than to simply change the menu. At the same time, he has said that whether the Iranian regime is ever toppled would ultimately be up to the Iranian people, and that outside military and economic pressure would have to be matched by an uprising from within. Critics of the regime often point to Iran's own record, where opponents have been tried on religious charges such as warring against God, to argue that dissent carries deadly risks inside the country. Whether Huckabee's blunt language is a wake-up call or a political firestorm, it is guaranteed to keep the world asking just how far the showdown with Iran could go.
