Shas MK Uriel Buso said changes will be necessary to Israel’s proposed draft legislation if the sides hope to reach an agreement, addressing the increasingly contentious issue in an interview with Mishpacha.

“The draft law needs to be made more flexible,” Buso said in the interview with journalist Avi Blum, according to the clip released by Mishpacha. The discussion focused on the draft legislation and the political negotiations surrounding it.

Buso’s comments come as Shas continues to defend its handling of the draft crisis. In a separate recent interview, Buso said the party had spent months attempting to advance a permanent draft arrangement rather than settling for what he described as a temporary “Band-Aid,” adding that the political climate surrounding the issue had become increasingly difficult and toxic.

The draft remains one of the most consequential issues for the Haredi parties, with any prospective legislation required to navigate demands concerning the status of bnei yeshivos, enforcement against those who do not enlist, and the political and legal challenges surrounding exemptions from military service.

Buso’s acknowledgment that the legislation requires greater flexibility is particularly significant as Shas seeks a formula capable of securing sufficient political support while addressing the demands of the party’s rabbinic leadership and Haredi constituency.
