The U.S. economy expanded at an annualized rate of 3.4% in the third quarter of 2026, accelerating from 2.2% in the previous quarter and exceeding economists’ expectations, according to an advance estimate released by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis on October 29. The latest figures mark the strongest quarterly growth in a year, reflecting robust business investment, continued consumer spending and increased government expenditures. Consumer spending rose at an annualized rate of 3.8%, demonstrating that household demand continued to support economic activity despite financial pressures facing many Americans. Business investment also accelerated, with spending on equipment and information-processing technology contributing to the expansion amid a broader surge in artificial intelligence-related investment. The report offers evidence of continued economic momentum, even as higher energy prices and international tensions create uncertainty for businesses and consumers.

However, the growth figures also reveal challenges beneath the headline number, as declining exports and rising imports partially offset gains from domestic economic activity. The report showed that the personal consumption expenditures price index, a key inflation measure closely monitored by the Federal Reserve, rose at an annualized rate of 2.1% during the quarter, down from 5% in the second quarter. Core PCE inflation, which excludes food and energy prices, slowed to 2.5% from 3.3%, suggesting that quarterly price pressures eased even as the economy expanded. Strong investment in technology and equipment helped support growth, although the preliminary figures remain subject to revision as more complete data becomes available. The combination of faster economic growth and slower quarterly inflation provides an important snapshot of the U.S. economy, but rising energy costs, housing weakness and uncertainty over future trade conditions remain potential challenges in the months ahead.
