Senate Majority Leader John Thune accused Democrats of driving the country toward a government shutdown with what he described as reckless partisan demands.

“This is a hijacking of the American people — and it’s the American people that are going to pay the price,” Thune said, warning that the consequences of stalled negotiations will be felt nationwide.

The remarks come as lawmakers remain locked in a bitter standoff over federal spending. Republicans argue that Democratic proposals include wasteful and divisive priorities, while Democrats maintain that their package addresses urgent social and economic needs.

With the deadline to fund the government fast approaching, the war of words between party leaders underscores the political gridlock in Washington. A shutdown would threaten federal services, delay pay for government employees, and ripple through the economy, heightening the stakes for both sides.

Thune’s comments reflect the growing frustration among Republican leadership as pressure mounts to strike a deal before the clock runs out.
