British counterterrorism police have arrested two men as part of an investigation into a suspected terrorist plot targeting the Jewish community in Manchester.

The two men, both in their 30s, were arrested on Newton Street in central Manchester on Sunday, September 20, under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000. They were taken to a London police station and remain in custody as the investigation continues.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, said the arrests followed a long-running proactive investigation that authorities believe disrupted a plot targeting Manchester's Jewish community.

The arrests came during the High Holy Day period, shortly before Yom Kippur. Police acknowledged the concern the investigation could cause within the Jewish community and said counterterrorism officers are working with Greater Manchester Police and other partners to provide additional protective-security support and advice to Jewish communities.

As part of the same investigation, officers carried out searches at properties in Salford and Liverpool. Warrants have been obtained allowing the two suspects to remain in custody until September 27 while investigators continue their inquiries.

Police stressed that they do not currently believe there is an ongoing threat to the public connected with the investigation, while continuing to urge members of the public to remain vigilant.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police have not announced charges against the two men.
