Shaky video circulating online shows riot-geared police moving through smoke and flames in a park-like area of Paris with benches and outdoor seating. The account sharing the footage claims rioters were throwing Molotov cocktails at officers, but major coverage has not confirmed petrol bombs at that spot. The scene does fit the wider pattern of Saturday, October 24, when largely peaceful daytime marches against rising living costs and inequality turned confrontational at night. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said police faced an extremely high level of violence from "ultra-left" groups, including about 500 people identified as rioters. The clashes lasted around two hours, with police using tear gas and water cannon.

Nearly 1,000 people were detained across France that day, and Paris prosecutors reported 64 arrests, including six minors, with 40 people held in custody mostly over suspected weapons offenses or preparing violence. Nuñez said looting was far smaller than the previous weekend, when about 3,000 businesses were damaged or looted, and that no town halls or police stations were targeted this time. Authorities had put 70,000 security forces on the streets, but there is still widespread anger over the crackdown, and opposition figure Jean-Luc Mélenchon accused police of firing indiscriminately at protesters. With marches drawing hundreds of thousands of people only to end in clashes with hooded youths, the big questions are who is behind the violence, what the video really shows, and whether next weekend will bring more of the same.
