Violent confrontations erupted in Bnei Brak on Tuesday night after the arrest of a young Chareidi man sparked widespread protests, with demonstrators clashing with Israeli police and blocking major roads. Reports from the scene described injuries, allegations of police violence, and the use of stun grenades to disperse protesters.
The disturbances began following a police operation in the city, where officers detained a young man. Initial reports suggested that the arrest involved a yeshiva bochur wanted for failing to report for military service, prompting large numbers of Chareidi residents to gather in protest.
However, Israeli police disputed those reports, stating that the arrests were connected to alleged criminal offenses rather than military draft violations.
According to police, two suspects were taken into custody on suspicion of interfering with officers performing their duties and disturbing public order. Both were transferred for questioning.
The situation quickly escalated as demonstrators gathered near Yitzchak Nissim Street, where confrontations broke out between protesters and police officers. Additional police units were dispatched as the unrest spread to surrounding areas.
The demonstrations subsequently reached Route 4, a major highway near Bnei Brak, where protesters blocked traffic in both directions, causing significant disruptions.
Reports from the scene indicated that fires were lit on the roadway and stones were thrown toward police vehicles. A vehicle window was also reportedly shattered during confrontations between demonstrators and motorists.
Police deployed additional forces, including specialized public-order units, in an effort to disperse the crowds and restore traffic.
According to Israeli media reports, officers used stun grenades near a gas station as tensions intensified. Several people reportedly sustained injuries during the confrontations, with some receiving initial medical treatment at the scene.
Separately, footage circulated by Yeshiva World News was described as showing an Israeli police officer striking a Chareidi man during the disturbances. The alleged assault has not been independently verified, and the circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain unclear.
The incident comes amid continued tensions between segments of the Chareidi community and Israeli authorities over the arrest and military enlistment of yeshiva bochurim.
Although police maintained that Tuesday night's arrests were unrelated to military draft enforcement, the initial reports surrounding the detentions contributed to the rapid escalation of the protests.
Authorities continued working to restore order as the disturbances spread through Bnei Brak and onto the nearby highway.
