Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu traveled to an IDF outpost near Gaza's so-called Yellow Line on September 2, touring an area shaped by nearly three years of war and standing before a landscape of collapsed buildings and rubble. Footage from the visit shows him in military gear alongside soldiers under camouflage netting, gesturing toward the destruction below as he was briefed by commanders on the ground. He was accompanied by IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, Southern Command chief Maj. Gen. Yaniv Asor, and 7th Armored Brigade commander Col. Elad Zuri, whom Netanyahu referred to, along with the surrounding troops, as "heroic."

During the visit, Netanyahu was direct about Israel's current position in the enclave, stating that Israeli forces control roughly 60 percent of the Strip and intend to expand that control further. He framed the ongoing military presence as part of a continuing effort to eliminate threats, saying operations to that end are happening "day in and day out." He also confirmed that Israeli troops do not plan to withdraw from the Yellow Line, the informal boundary marking the current limit of IDF-controlled territory inside Gaza. The remarks came as part of a broader operational briefing that included discussion of a senior Hamas figure recently captured by Israeli forces.

The visit took place against the backdrop of a fragile, multi-phase ceasefire process that began earlier in the year following the return of the remains of the last known hostage. Netanyahu has repeatedly said that any large-scale reconstruction of Gaza cannot move forward until Hamas disarms, a demand the group has so far refused to meet despite a U.S.-brokered proposal aimed at bridging that gap. He reiterated that stance during the outpost visit, describing Hamas's disarmament and the broader demilitarization of Gaza as the next phase of Israel's objectives before any rebuilding can begin.

The scenes from the visit, IDF soldiers positioned amid a devastated urban landscape, underscore the scale of destruction that has accumulated across Gaza since the war began following Hamas's October 2023 attack. While Israeli officials have quietly signaled some openness to limited reconstruction work in areas already under full IDF control, they've stressed that such efforts would be restricted and supervised by the military rather than handled by residents. For now, Netanyahu's tour of the ruins serves as both a display of the military's current footprint in the Strip and a signal that Israel's core conditions for a fuller resolution remain unchanged.
