A dramatic piece of combat footage is showing just how crowded Ukraine's skies have become during nightly drone attacks. The clip, filmed from the camera of a Ukrainian Sting-type interceptor drone, tracks a Russian Shahed or Geran-type strike drone as it cruises low over open countryside, seemingly seconds from being intercepted head-on. Instead, a surface-to-air missile, reportedly fired from a US-supplied Hawk air defense system, beats the drone to the punch and detonates the Shahed in a sudden, bright explosion. The interceptor drone is left with nothing to chase, its target destroyed just moments before it could close the gap itself.

The footage is a striking snapshot of Ukraine's layered air defense in action, where ground-based missile batteries and homegrown interceptor drones are often racing toward the very same target during a single raid. Both systems exist to counter the same threat: cheap, Iranian-designed Shahed and Geran drones that Russia now launches by the dozens most nights, overwhelming any single line of defense on its own. Interceptor drones like the Sting have become a low-cost, mass-produced answer to this barrage, while older Western-supplied systems like the Hawk still provide a faster, longer-range kill option when the timing lines up. Together, they form a defense network that is not always neat or coordinated, but one that is increasingly effective at keeping Shaheds from ever reaching their intended targets.
