A group of mispallelim in Kiryas Joel was seen reciting Sephardic Selichot this week, bringing the distinctive Elul minhag of Sephardic communities into the heart of the predominantly Chassidish community.

Video circulated Thursday shows men and children gathered for Selichot in Kiryas Joel. The footage was shared with the caption “Sephardic Selichot today in Kiryas Joel.”

Unlike Ashkenazic communities, which begin Selichot shortly before Rosh Hashanah, Sephardic communities traditionally begin reciting Selichot near the beginning of Elul and continue throughout the month.

While Kiryas Joel is overwhelmingly associated with the Satmar Chassidic community, it also has an established Sephardic presence. Cong Shaare Beth Yosef, also listed as Beth Hamidrash Sefaradim Shaare Beth Yosef, is a Sephardic/Mizrahi congregation located on Israel Zupnick Drive in Kiryas Joel.
