President Donald Trump has declared an “Economic D-Day” against Iran, promising what he described as the “most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country.” The announcement marks a major escalation in Washington’s pressure campaign against Tehran, with Trump warning that nations, businesses and financial institutions that continue providing Iran with an economic lifeline could face severe consequences. The president specifically pointed to oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries and front companies as targets of the new campaign.

Reporting from Tel Aviv, Fox News chief foreign correspondent Trey Yingst highlighted the announcement as a sweeping attempt to cut off the remaining sources of revenue that allow the Iranian regime to finance its operations. Trump has called on U.S. allies to help isolate Tehran, arguing that the pressure is necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and to weaken its ability to support terrorism and project power across the region. The administration’s warning also raises the stakes for countries that have continued doing business with Iran despite existing U.S. sanctions.

The economic offensive comes as the broader U.S.-Iran confrontation remains deeply tied to the strategic Strait of Hormuz, where shipping and military activity have become a major source of tension. Trump has said the Strait remains open while also describing the U.S. naval blockade as highly effective, while Iranian officials have continued disputing Washington’s account of the situation. The combination of economic pressure, sanctions enforcement and military positioning could leave Tehran facing an increasingly narrow set of options as Washington attempts to force a major strategic decision.

Iran, however, has rejected Trump’s declaration and portrayed the new pressure campaign as another failed U.S. policy rather than a decisive blow against Tehran. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has pushed back against Washington’s approach, while Iranian officials continue to accuse the United States of using economic warfare to pressure the regime. The confrontation therefore extends far beyond another round of sanctions: both sides are now presenting the economic battle as a test of who can withstand pressure longer.

Trump’s “Economic D-Day” declaration now leaves a much bigger question hanging over the conflict: what happens if countries that continue helping Iran actually face the threatened economic consequences? If Washington follows through with aggressive secondary sanctions and succeeds in closing the financial channels Tehran relies upon, the pressure could reach far beyond Iran’s borders and force businesses and governments around the world to choose between access to the U.S. financial system and continued dealings with Tehran. For Iran, the campaign represents another front in a conflict that is increasingly being fought not only with military power, but also through money, trade, shipping and financial isolation.
