An Israeli court has convicted Knesset member Ofer Cassif of assaulting a police officer during a confrontation at a demonstration in May 2022.

The incident took place in the southern Chevron Hills, where Cassif, a member of the Hadash party, became involved in a dispute with police officers.

Video footage from the scene showed Cassif striking a police officer during the confrontation.

The case was heard by the Yerushalayim Magistrate's Court, which found Cassif guilty more than four years after the incident.

The conviction concerns Cassif's conduct during the confrontation and does not involve allegations against the wider Jewish community.

Further legal proceedings, including sentencing and any possible appeal, are separate from the conviction.
