Haredi Crowd Swarms Lod After Draft Dodger Detained, Cheers Fast Release

A brief but tense standoff unfolded early Sunday in the ultra-Orthodox Ahisamach neighborhood of Lod after police responding to a noise complaint discovered that one of the men present was a wanted draft evader. Officers detained the man on the spot, but he was released roughly half an hour later, before Military Police could arrive to take him into custody. The incident followed a now-familiar pattern in Israel's ongoing enforcement push against Haredi men who have failed to comply with IDF conscription orders, in which word of a detention spreads rapidly through community alert networks, prompting dozens of residents to converge on the scene within minutes.

Video from the scene showed a large crowd of Haredi men in white shirts and kippahs dancing together in the residential street at dusk, celebrating the man's release as police vehicles sat nearby with their lights flashing. Similar scenes have played out repeatedly across Israel in recent months as police and the IDF have stepped up efforts to enforce conscription against the ultra-Orthodox community, an effort that has frequently been met with rapid, coordinated community mobilization rather than confrontation with law enforcement. In several other recent cases, would-be detainees have been shielded from arrest entirely by crowds that gathered outside their homes to physically block Military Police from reaching them.

The episode underscores the depth of the divide still separating Israel's government from large segments of the ultra-Orthodox community over mandatory military service, an issue that has repeatedly strained the ruling coalition and drawn sharp criticism from lawmakers who argue that repeated releases undermine the rule of law at a moment when Israeli soldiers continue serving and sacrificing on multiple fronts. Police leadership has shifted its formal policy on Haredi deserters more than once in recent months, alternating between directives to actively detain evaders and quieter periods of non-enforcement amid fears of unrest, leaving officers on the ground to navigate a policy landscape that remains, in practice, inconsistent from one encounter to the next.
