SpaceX has officially unveiled plans for Starbase Louisiana, a staggering $100 billion spaceport that will rise from roughly 125,000 acres of coastal marshland in Vermilion Parish near Pecan Island. Announced on August 25, 2026, alongside Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell, the project has been described by state officials as the single largest capital investment in Louisiana's history. The site sits near the small rural community of Pecan Island, roughly 200 miles west of New Orleans, and will become SpaceX's fourth and largest launch facility. Company leadership framed the announcement as a turning point not just for Louisiana, but for the future pace of human spaceflight itself.

At full buildout, Starbase Louisiana is expected to feature as many as ten launch pads spread across multiple launch complexes, designed specifically to support the company's next-generation Starship rocket. The facility will be entirely self-sustaining, incorporating its own propellant production, power generation, vehicle processing operations, deep-water shipping access, and even an airport. SpaceX plans to install more than a dozen launch towers at the site, enabling a launch cadence of over 30 Starship flights per day, a pace no spaceport in the world has ever been built to sustain. That level of activity would support thousands of missions annually, ranging from satellite deployments to journeys toward the Moon and eventually Mars.

The economic impact promised by the project is substantial, with SpaceX and Louisiana officials projecting around 3,000 direct new jobs over the next decade, paying an average salary nearly double the current Vermilion Parish wage. Louisiana Economic Development estimates the ripple effect could generate more than 8,100 additional indirect jobs, bringing the total economic boost in the surrounding Acadiana region above 11,000 new employment opportunities. Governor Landry called the announcement a "pivotal moment" for the state, noting it pushes Louisiana's total new investment commitments beyond $250 billion. Construction on the sprawling site is scheduled to begin in 2027, with SpaceX targeting its very first Starship launch from the location as early as 2029.

Despite the excitement surrounding the announcement, the project has also drawn scrutiny from environmental advocates concerned about its impact on the fragile coastal ecosystem. Pecan Island serves as a critical natural buffer against storm surges and a vital sanctuary for migratory wildlife, prompting calls for transparent public hearings before construction moves forward. In response, SpaceX has pledged that large portions of the total acreage will remain undisturbed marshland, with plans to partner with state wildlife and coastal protection agencies on habitat conservation and shoreline restoration efforts. The company has also promised discounted Starlink internet service for local residents, an olive branch of sorts as it works to build community support for one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in the region's history.
