Another oil tanker is burning in the Gulf of Oman, and the Iranian Navy says it knows exactly why it was in the danger zone. According to Iranian state media, naval monitoring teams spotted the unnamed vessel on fire after it switched off its tracking systems and tried to cross a prohibited area east of the Strait of Hormuz. The navy called the ship a "violating" vessel and warned that uncoordinated movements through such areas create insecurity and serious hazards for other ships. What it did not say is what actually sparked the blaze, and it gave no name, flag, or operator for the tanker, nor any word on casualties or the crew's condition.

The fire adds to a grim run of incidents in the same waters, coming after the container ship GFS Pride sank following a fire and the cargo ship Cape Dao went down after being struck by a projectile. Several other tankers have also reportedly caught fire or been hit in recent days, and a maritime risk firm has warned that ships remain exposed to indiscriminate attacks even when they turn off their trackers to avoid detection. The prohibited zone itself was announced by Iran's Revolutionary Guards in September, and Tehran has declared the Strait of Hormuz closed since the outbreak of war with the United States in February, while the US enforces a blockade on Iranian ports. With a huge share of the world's oil moving through this chokepoint, every new fire raises fresh questions about who is responsible, how safe commercial shipping can be, and what it could mean for global energy supplies.
