Yemen’s Houthi movement has released footage it says shows a surface-to-air missile striking a Royal Saudi Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon. The thermal night video, circulated by Houthi media, appears to capture a missile detonating near the aircraft over Saada province, with images suggesting possible damage and fuel leaking from the wings. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree announced the engagement on October 14, 2026, stating the plane was at risk of crashing after taking off from Saudi Arabia’s Taif base. The video includes targeting overlays, a bright flash, and debris-like effects, though it does not clearly identify the aircraft. Experts have suggested the jet may have crashed inside Saudi territory, yet no wreckage images have emerged. Unlike a previous Houthi claim involving an F-15 in September that was later verified, this incident lacks independent visual confirmation of a downed aircraft. Saudi officials have so far issued no statement confirming any loss of an aircraft.
The claimed strike comes amid a broader escalation of cross-border attacks between the two sides. On the same day, Saudi forces reported intercepting a Houthi cruise missile over Medina, while recent weeks have seen Houthi assaults on Riyadh airport and Aramco facilities answered by Saudi airstrikes inside Yemen. The absence of wreckage photos and official Saudi confirmation leaves the actual outcome of the engagement uncertain. Analysts note that the release of the footage serves both as a propaganda tool and a signal of Houthi air-defense capabilities. The incident adds fresh tension to an already volatile front, where both sides continue to trade strikes and claims. Whether the Eurofighter sustained critical damage or returned safely remains unverified at this stage, keeping the focus on the competing narratives emerging from the conflict.
