A devastating four-alarm fire tore through a residential block in Elmhurst, Queens, on Monday evening, killing a 34-year-old woman and injuring multiple others as flames rapidly spread across several buildings. The blaze erupted around 6:44 p.m. at a home located at 83-32 Dongan Avenue and quickly intensified, extending from the first floor to the roof and jumping to at least two neighboring structures.

Emergency officials reported that nine people were injured in total, including a 22-year-old man who remains in critical condition and a child who sustained serious injuries. Five other civilians were treated for minor injuries, while two firefighters suffered smoke inhalation while battling the intense flames. The woman who died was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire prompted a massive response from the FDNY, with approximately 230 firefighters deployed to contain the blaze. Crews faced extreme heat, heavy smoke, and challenging conditions, including deep water in the basement that complicated suppression efforts. Flames also reached power lines, forcing evacuations and heightening the danger as firefighters worked through the night to bring the fire under control.

After hours of sustained firefighting, crews were able to prevent further spread and protect surrounding homes. Several families were displaced as a result of the damage, and the affected buildings suffered extensive destruction. Fire officials confirmed that the cause of the blaze remains under active investigation.

The deadly Elmhurst fire occurred on a night already marked by heightened emergency activity, as another major blaze was reported in the Bronx within hours. City officials expressed condolences to the victim’s family and praised the swift response and courage of first responders who prevented an even greater tragedy under extremely dangerous conditions.
