Video circulating from the storm shows aircraft tilting and shifting violently under powerful gusts, creating the astonishing appearance of planes being tossed around like toys. The footage is consistent with severe weather that swept across northern and central Italy on August 20–21, bringing intense thunderstorms, flooding and major disruptions.

The airport shown in the footage appears to be Forlì Airport in Emilia-Romagna, where authorities temporarily closed the facility for about an hour as the storm front moved through the area. Regional officials reported more than 150 emergency interventions across Emilia-Romagna, with numerous trees brought down by powerful winds. Winds around the Forlì airport area exceeded 100 kilometers per hour, underscoring just how dangerous conditions became on the ground.

The storm was part of a broader outbreak of extreme weather affecting several Italian regions, including Liguria, Tuscany, Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna. In Tuscany alone, more than 23,000 lightning strikes were recorded during the storm period, while wind gusts reached 106 kilometers per hour along the Pisan coast and 103 kilometers per hour in the Florence province. Heavy rainfall also triggered flooding, falling trees, power outages and infrastructure damage across affected areas.

The airport footage is particularly striking because aircraft on the ground can still be vulnerable to severe crosswinds and turbulent conditions even when they are not airborne. Small general-aviation aircraft, with their relatively light weight and large surface areas, can be especially susceptible to being rocked or displaced by powerful gusts when parked or taxiing.
