The USS San Antonio has now sunk three cartel fuel ships in just nine days, and the pattern behind these strikes is becoming impossible to ignore. According to SOUTHCOM, Marines and sailors boarded another floating refueling station in the eastern Pacific on Thursday, cleared it without incident, handed the crew over to Ecuador, and sent the hull to the bottom of the ocean. The vessel was linked to Los Choneros, the same Ecuadorian criminal organization tied to the two previous strikes on August 28 and September 2. Every detail lines up: the same cartel, the same command structure, and almost the exact same script playing out for the third time in less than two weeks.

These aren't random encounters at sea. The targeted vessels function as floating refueling stations, essentially fuel depots that let smaller go-fast boats carrying cocaine travel much farther from shore than they otherwise could. Removing one of these fuel ships forces trafficking crews into a tough choice: either cram their smaller boats with extra fuel, cutting into cargo space, or shorten their runs and risk getting caught closer to land. SOUTHCOM has said that each interdiction cuts off a critical node in the traffickers' logistics chain, and hitting three of these ships in nine days suggests the U.S. has a clear picture of exactly where this network operates.

The operations follow a consistent, almost procedural rhythm each time. Marines and sailors launched from the USS San Antonio interdict the vessel, board it, search it, and clear it without incident, all while working in coordination with the government of Ecuador. Crew members are safely removed and handed over to Ecuadorian authorities, and only after everyone is off the vessel do U.S. forces sink it. This is all part of a broader campaign under the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition and Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere, an effort aimed at dismantling narco-terrorist networks operating throughout the region, not just striking isolated targets.

What three sinkings in nine days really reveals is how the Pacific drug trade actually functions behind the scenes. Los Choneros was designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the U.S. State Department in 2025, and the fuel vessels being targeted were reportedly already known to Washington, having been previously identified and sanctioned by the Treasury Department. That means these aren't ships stumbled upon by chance, but rather part of a mapped-out network that American and Ecuadorian forces have been tracking for some time. With the pace of these operations showing no signs of slowing, it raises an obvious question: how many more of these fuel ships are still out there, and how long can the cartel's at-sea supply chain keep absorbing hits like this before it breaks down entirely.
