HORMUZ STANDOFF ESCALATES: ran’s Revolutionary Guard Threatens Ships in Strait of Hormuz, Demands Retreat to Dubai

Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz are escalating after reports that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) threatened multiple commercial vessels attempting to transit the strategic waterway, including the bulk carrier NEW BORN 26 and crude oil tanker FELICITY. According to the circulating maritime update, the vessels were ordered to abandon their transit and return to anchorage near Dubai or face unspecified consequences. The reported warnings add to a series of confrontations involving commercial shipping as Tehran seeks to enforce restrictions on maritime traffic through one of the world’s most important energy corridors. In recent weeks, the IRGC has repeatedly claimed that vessels using routes it considers unauthorized have been struck or damaged, although individual incidents and their circumstances have not always been independently confirmed.

The latest developments follow Iranian claims that an unidentified oil tanker caught fire after striking naval mines near the Strait of Hormuz, allegedly after disabling its tracking systems while entering a restricted area. Similar claims involving damaged vessels and mine strikes have emerged during the wider conflict, raising concerns about the safety of crews, the security of international shipping lanes, and the potential for further escalation. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical passage for global oil and gas shipments, making prolonged disruptions a concern for energy markets and countries dependent on supplies moving through the Gulf. However, the specific circumstances surrounding the reported tanker fire and the threats against NEW BORN 26 and FELICITY require independent confirmation. With commercial vessels facing growing uncertainty over safe passage, further confrontations could deepen the maritime crisis and complicate efforts to maintain freedom of navigation in the region.
