Crown Heights Shomrim is urging local drivers to use caution after reports that men traveling through the neighborhood have been approaching motorists and offering unsolicited repairs for dents in their vehicles.
According to Shomrim, two men traveling in a red sedan have been stopping people on the street and offering to repair vehicle dents for several hundred dollars. A child has reportedly accompanied them on some occasions.
The men are said to use a spray-and-sanding technique and tell drivers that the repair will produce results within 24 hours. Shomrim warned residents not to engage with them or hand over money, saying the purported repair can instead result in additional damage to the vehicle.
Shomrim volunteers subsequently located and confronted the individuals, according to the organization, after which the men left Crown Heights.
The community patrol said its technology team is continuing to monitor the situation in case they return to the neighborhood.
Shomrim is asking anyone who was approached in connection with the alleged scheme to contact its 24-hour hotline at 718-774-3333. Residents facing an emergency should call 911.
