New footage obtained and verified by The New York Times offers the clearest look yet at the exact moment a massive section of Langtang Lirung's north face gave way on August 26, triggering a chain of flash floods that would go on to devastate communities across Nepal and Tibet. In the video, hikers can be heard reacting to a loud crack echoing across the valley just before an enormous mass of ice, rock, and debris breaks loose and plunges downward. The collapse throws up a towering dust cloud that spreads rapidly through the surrounding terrain, dwarfing everything nearby. A second piece of footage captures the immediate aftermath, showing debris racing down the mountainside at tremendous speed, marking the earliest visible moments of what would soon become a catastrophic regional disaster.

Scientists have since confirmed that the initial event was a high-altitude glacial and bedrock failure, registering as a seismic event with a magnitude estimated around 5.2, though some early readings from the U.S. Geological Survey initially logged it lower. Satellite imagery from Planet Labs, along with follow-up analysis from Nepali authorities and Chinese researchers, has helped confirm that a large section of glacier sheared away from high on the mountain before crashing into the valley below. The resulting debris set off flash flooding along rivers including the Lhende Khola and Bhote Koshi, sending walls of water, mud, and rock rushing downstream into populated areas with little to no warning.

The human toll has been staggering. Nepali officials have confirmed that the flooding has killed more than 500 people, while well over a thousand remain unaccounted for as search efforts continue across the affected region. Among the missing are a significant number of foreign tourists, including hikers and pilgrims who were traveling through the area at the time, with families in the United States and elsewhere still awaiting word on loved ones caught in the disaster's path. Survivors have described the floodwater surging down the mountainside with terrifying speed, comparing it to being hit by a wall of water with almost no time to react.

Beyond the immediate tragedy, scientists are now examining what role, if any, climate change may have played in destabilizing the mountain in the first place. Some researchers have pointed to permafrost thaw and long-term glacier destabilization as possible contributing factors, suggesting that warming temperatures at high altitude may be making similar collapses more likely in fragile Himalayan terrain. While investigations into the exact causes are ongoing, the newly verified footage offers rare, direct visual evidence of how quickly a seemingly localized mountain collapse can escalate into a transboundary humanitarian catastrophe. As rescue and recovery operations continue in both Nepal and Tibet, authorities say the full scope of the disaster's impact may not be known for some time.
