Financial markets are widely expecting the Federal Reserve to leave interest rates unchanged at its October 28, 2026, policy meeting, even as persistent inflation keeps the possibility of another increase firmly in focus. Bloomberg journalist Michael McKee highlighted the market consensus, with investors looking beyond the immediate decision toward the Fed’s December 8–9 meeting. Interest-rate futures were pricing in roughly an 80% to 90% chance of a rate increase by December, reflecting growing expectations that policymakers may need to maintain pressure on inflation. The Fed raised its benchmark rate by 25 basis points in September, bringing the target range to 3.75%–4.00%, after consumer prices accelerated to 3.7% year over year. Rising energy costs and tariff-related pressures have complicated the inflation outlook, while a September jobs report showing only 29,000 additional positions has raised concerns about the strength of the labor market.

Attention is now turning to Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s press conference, where investors will look for clues about whether another rate increase is likely before the end of the year. Officials face a difficult balancing act: inflation remains well above the Fed’s 2% target, but tighter monetary policy could increase borrowing costs for households and businesses while placing additional pressure on employment and economic growth. The October meeting also comes shortly before the US midterm elections, adding political sensitivity to a decision with consequences for mortgages, credit cards, business financing and financial markets. Although futures pricing reflects a strong market expectation of a December increase, it does not guarantee that the Fed will act, since incoming inflation, employment and economic-growth data could change the outlook. Investors will therefore be watching Warsh’s remarks for indications of how policymakers intend to weigh persistent price pressures against signs of labor-market weakness.
