Vance: 'We've Destroyed' Iran's Nuclear Program and Military — Now What?

By Editorial Staff | August 9, 2026

Vice President JD Vance delivered a blunt, no-nonsense assessment of Iran's military standing in a Fox News appearance, declaring that the Trump administration has already dismantled the core of Tehran's warfighting capability. "We've destroyed their nuclear program. We've destroyed their conventional military," Vance said, adding that Iran's asymmetric capabilities have been radically reduced as well. The vice president said Washington is now watching closely to see whether Iran's leadership is willing to make the long-term changes necessary for a better relationship with the United States, framing the moment as a genuine test of Tehran's intentions rather than a formality.

Vance made clear the administration is prepared to walk away from a deeper rapprochement if Iran refuses to change course, saying flatly that if Tehran isn't willing to make those changes, "that's fine, too" — a signal that the U.S. sees itself negotiating from a position of overwhelming strength rather than urgency. The comments follow a string of targeted American strikes in recent months on Iranian nuclear infrastructure, including facilities at Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan, along with coastal military assets, part of a broader campaign to secure safe shipping through the Strait of Hormuz after attacks on commercial vessels in the region. Vance said the administration remains focused on maximizing the flow of oil and gas out of the strait as talks with Iranian officials continue.

Beyond the military assessment, Vance tied the administration's Iran strategy directly to energy policy at home, saying the push for greater Middle East oil and gas production is aimed squarely at driving down energy prices for American families. He described the approach as pressure paired with opportunity — Iran can either accept the terms of a more stable, less confrontational relationship with Washington, or continue facing a United States that has already proven its willingness and ability to act decisively. With negotiations ongoing and military options still on the table should Iran attempt to rebuild what has been destroyed, Vance's remarks underscore an administration confident it is negotiating from a position of undisputed strength.
