CHINA: LandSpace Lands Orbital Booster and Joins SpaceX Elite Club

Chinese startup LandSpace has achieved a major milestone by successfully recovering the first stage of its Zhuque-3 rocket, becoming only the third private company in the world to land an orbital-class booster. The recovery took place on Wednesday after an orbital launch, with the booster touching down vertically on a desert pad in Gansu Province. Using deployable landing legs, the stainless-steel stage fired its engines for a controlled deceleration and settled upright amid rising dust clouds. The feat places LandSpace alongside SpaceX and Blue Origin in the exclusive group of private firms that have demonstrated this capability.

The Zhuque-3 Y2 mission marked China’s first private land-based recovery of an orbital booster, signaling rapid progress in the country’s commercial space sector. LandSpace’s use of methalox propulsion technology supports its push toward lower-cost and higher-frequency launches. Video of the descent clearly shows the booster navigating the final moments of flight before the precise touchdown. This success reduces the technological gap between Chinese private companies and their leading American counterparts.

Reusable rockets remain a key driver of cost reduction in spaceflight, and LandSpace’s achievement demonstrates that Chinese firms are closing in on that standard. By recovering the first stage intact, the company can now focus on refurbishment and reuse, a step that has transformed launch economics elsewhere. The vertical landing in a remote desert setting underscores the engineering precision required for such operations. Officials and industry observers view the result as a concrete advance for China’s growing commercial launch industry.

As competition in reusable rocketry intensifies, LandSpace’s milestone adds a new player to the short list of companies capable of orbital-class booster recovery. The successful landing expands the global field beyond the two American firms that previously stood alone. With this demonstration, Chinese commercial space efforts move closer to routine, affordable access to orbit. The Zhuque-3 recovery stands as a clear marker of that progress.
