New York's strange "sewer people" saga has just claimed another chapter, and this one happened in the dead of night. Just before 1 a.m. on Sunday, October 11, a witness told police that three men dropped into a manhole at West 141st Street and Amsterdam Avenue in Hamilton Heights. NYPD officers, firefighters, and EMS crews raced to the scene expecting the worst, but by the time they arrived, the men had already disappeared into the dark. The investigation is still open, and as of now there is no word on who the men were, where they went, or whether they ever came back up.

The sighting does not stand alone. Just two days earlier, on October 9, five people were reported climbing out of a sewer on East 82nd Street on the Upper East Side, and similar reports have been piling up across Manhattan and Brooklyn since May 2026, often involving groups carrying shovels and wearing waders. Police and the city's Department of Environmental Protection believe the pattern points to scavenging, with urban explorers hunting for valuables, scrap metal, or even rumored gold said to have been flushed down the sewers after storms. Some people have been arrested for trespassing in earlier cases, and investigators have so far found no confirmed link to any broader threat. Still, officials keep repeating the same warning: entering a manhole is illegal and extremely dangerous, and the questions about who keeps going underground, and why, are not going away.
