Flavio Bolsonaro pulled off a stunning first-round upset in Brazil's presidential election, edging incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva roughly 47% to 45% and forcing an October 25 runoff that caught investors completely off guard. Most pre-election polls had Lula leading or the race essentially tied, making Bolsonaro's lead a genuine surprise rather than a close call anyone saw coming. The 45-year-old right-wing senator and eldest son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, who is serving a lengthy prison sentence over a coup plot, actually outperformed his father's own first-round numbers from prior elections, a result that arrived alongside a broader rightward shift across Brazil's new Congress.

Brazilian markets reacted almost instantly, with the Bovespa stock index jumping to a record high and the national currency strengthening sharply as traders bet that Bolsonaro would steer the country toward fiscal austerity, lower taxes, and less state intervention in the economy if he wins the runoff. Prediction markets moved fast too, pushing Bolsonaro's odds of winning the presidency well above where they stood before the vote, as fund managers signaled growing confidence in a credible deficit-reduction plan under a possible Bolsonaro administration. With the real economy still grappling with high public debt and a widening deficit under Lula, investors are clearly reading Sunday's results as a signal that Brazil may be ready for a sharp change in direction, though the outcome still rests on a tight three-week sprint to the October 25 runoff.
