BODYCAM CAPTURES FIERY RESCUE: Officers Free Trapped Driver Within 60 Seconds
Body camera footage released by Holbrook, Massachusetts, police shows the dramatic moment officers pulled a driver from a burning Jeep. Officer Jonathan O'Brien was the first to arrive on Pine Street around 3:20 a.m. on Sunday, where a utility pole had been snapped in half and wires were hanging over the road. A huge blaze was burning in front of a house, and bystanders told him the driver was still inside. O'Brien found a 37-year-old man with one leg hanging out of the wrecked vehicle and learned that his right foot was pinned under the damaged dashboard. His foot and sneaker were on fire, and the man told the officer it was stuck and getting hot.
O'Brien, together with Sgt. Martin Faherty and Officer Matthew Richards, freed the man's foot and carried him to safety, and police say it took them less than one minute from arrival. The driver was treated at the scene and taken to a local hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening, while O'Brien suffered minor burns to his fingers. Police Chief David Del Papa said the officers worked under dangerous conditions and that their fast response likely saved the man's life. Police believe the driver, who has not been named, drunkenly left the road, hit a utility pole and a tree, and then crashed into a retaining wall at a home at 206 Pine Street, damaging several other properties. He is expected to be summonsed on charges of second-offense operating under the influence, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, a marked lanes violation and speeding, but his name hasn't been released because the court has not yet issued a criminal complaint. These are allegations only, and the driver is presumed innocent unless proven otherwise.
