CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper delivered a sweeping operational update this week, announcing that U.S. forces have supported the transit of more than one billion barrels of crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz over the past two months. Cooper said American forces have assisted more than 2,000 commercial vessel transits through the waterway, that the strait's primary shipping lanes have now been cleared of mines, and that traffic volume over the past two weeks has been higher than at any point in the last six months. At the same time, Cooper claimed Iran has exported zero barrels of crude since the blockade was reinstated, a sharp reversal for a country that has long relied on the strait as a critical export route. He also revealed that U.S. forces are working with regional partners to stand up a new coalition attack drone unit and to strengthen partner air defenses across the region.

Cooper framed the numbers as evidence that momentum is building in the Gulf, saying CENTCOM continues working with all six Gulf Cooperation Council members, along with U.S. agencies, insurers, and shipping companies, to keep pushing traffic volume higher. Iran, however, disputes the claim that its exports have been reduced to nothing. Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad said last month that exports have declined but insisted the country is still delivering oil to customers from outside its territorial waters, meaning the true scale of the blockade's impact remains contested. The competing claims underscore how central the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy corridors, has become to the broader standoff between Washington and Tehran, with control of the waterway now functioning as a barometer for who holds the upper hand.
