Israeli Border Police uncovered approximately 1.4 million shekels, worth roughly $400,000, hidden inside a specially built double-walled compartment of a vehicle attempting to enter Jerusalem over the weekend, authorities said. The discovery was made during a routine inspection at the Tunnels Checkpoint, a crossing point connecting Judea and Samaria to Jerusalem, when officers from the Jerusalem Envelope unit stopped the car for a search. What began as a standard vehicle inspection quickly turned into a significant seizure once officers began probing the car's interior more closely, eventually finding two bags stuffed with cash concealed behind a hidden panel built into the vehicle's structure.

Handheld video captured from the scene shows the moment of discovery unfold in real time, with one officer heard exclaiming in startled disbelief as the hidden compartment was pried open to reveal the cash inside. The unmistakable surprise in his reaction underscored just how deliberately concealed the money had been, suggesting the compartment was specifically engineered rather than improvised for a single trip. Following the discovery, the vehicle's driver, a 29-year-old resident of Jerusalem, was arrested on the spot and taken into custody for further questioning. Authorities have not yet publicly disclosed additional details about the driver's identity or any known affiliations, though the case has already drawn the involvement of some of Israel's most senior security investigative bodies.

Israeli police say they suspect the cash was intended to help finance terrorist activity, a serious allegation that has triggered a joint investigation between the Jerusalem District Police Central Unit and the Shin Bet, Israel's internal security service. The driver's detention has since been extended by court order as investigators work to determine the money's origin, its intended destination, and whether it connects to any broader financing network. This kind of joint law enforcement and intelligence response reflects the seriousness with which Israeli authorities treat suspected terror financing cases, particularly those involving deliberately concealed cash moving toward Jerusalem from the West Bank.

The seizure adds to a broader pattern of counter-terror financing operations Israeli security forces have carried out across Judea and Samaria in recent years, with authorities having confiscated tens of millions of shekels in suspected terror funds through similar operations since October 2023. Officials have repeatedly emphasized that disrupting the financial infrastructure behind terrorism is just as critical as preventing attacks themselves, since cutting off funding sources can limit an organization's ability to plan, recruit, and carry out future operations. As the investigation into this latest seizure continues, authorities are expected to trace the money's intended path and determine what role, if any, the driver played in a larger financing operation. For now, the case stands as a vivid example of how a routine checkpoint stop can sometimes uncover far more than officers initially expect.
