American drone maker Powerus has pulled back the curtain on the Matrix Fold, a compact, foldable FPV drone that has reportedly been selected for the Pentagon's Drone Dominance program. The 12-inch platform is designed to fold down small enough to fit into a backpack, letting operators carry it into the field and deploy it within seconds when the moment demands. Its body is 3D-printed, which allows individual parts to be swapped out on the spot rather than sending the whole unit back for repair. Powerus reportedly supplies the printing files needed to manufacture those replacement parts, meaning a damaged drone could theoretically be patched together in the field instead of shelved.

The numbers behind the Matrix Fold suggest a machine built for both speed and endurance. Powerus states the drone can hit a top speed of 242 km/h, carry a payload of up to 6.8 kilograms, and stay airborne for as long as 35 minutes on a single charge. It's also built around a modular architecture, meaning it shares compatibility with the company's other platforms, the Matrix 5, 7, 10, and F, so parts and payloads can move between systems rather than being locked to one design. Maintenance is tool-free, and the company says payloads can be swapped quickly, which matters a great deal when a unit needs to switch missions without heading back to a workshop.

Compliance and supply chain control appear to be central selling points for Powerus as it pitches the Matrix Fold to the Pentagon. The company states the drone is NDAA-compliant and Blue UAS certified, two labels that matter enormously for U.S. defense contracts wary of foreign-made components or software. Powerus also says it keeps the supply chain under its own control, a detail that speaks directly to ongoing concerns in Washington about dependence on parts sourced from adversarial nations. These credentials, paired with the drone's field-repairable design, position the Matrix Fold as a system built specifically with military procurement requirements in mind.

The real weight behind this announcement comes from where the Matrix Fold is headed next. In May 2026, the drone was reportedly selected for the second phase of the Pentagon's Drone Dominance program, an initiative described as being worth approximately $1 billion. That program is aimed at procuring tens of thousands of low-cost, expendable drones while simultaneously expanding domestic U.S. production capacity, a dual goal of arming forces cheaply and reducing reliance on foreign manufacturing. If the Matrix Fold clears the next phase of evaluation, serial production is reportedly expected to follow, potentially putting a backpack-sized, field-repairable drone into the hands of American forces at scale.
