DUST BREAKS THE HINGE: Apple's $1,999 iPhone Duo Fails JerryRigEverything Durability Test
Apple's first foldable, the $1,999 iPhone Duo, has failed JerryRigEverything's durability test just as it hit stores on October 23, 2026. YouTuber Zack Nelson found that the outer screen, protected by Ceramic Shield 2, held up well, with scratches showing at level 7 on the Mohs scale. The 7.6-inch inner display was much weaker and scratched at level 2, although its matte nano-texture coating helped some marks fade. The dust test caused the first real failure, because fine dust got into the hinge through several points despite the phone's IP68 rating. It overwhelmed the magnets meant to hold the phone shut and left it jammed open.
The bend test did the worst damage, leaving a permanent green line across the inner screen before the display stopped responding. Nelson said he has tested folding phones since the first generation, seven years ago, and that most of them survive, but the iPhone Duo did not. One report put the cost of fixing an inner display at around $1,000, which makes the failure even more painful on a phone that costs almost $2,000. Critics point out that a deliberate bend test and a dust bath go well beyond normal daily use, and Apple has not publicly responded. The question hanging over the Duo is whether ordinary owners will ever run into these problems, or whether this is just first-generation foldable growing pain.
