A 46-year-old Rockland County man died after being found with a gunshot wound inside his vehicle on the upper level of the George Washington Bridge Tuesday night, October 20, prompting a major police investigation and hours of traffic disruptions.

The shooting occurred on the New Jersey-bound side of the bridge, where authorities discovered the wounded driver inside a Volkswagen near the western end of the crossing.

Emergency responders transported the victim to Englewood Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

According to local news reports, the victim was an off-duty Con Edison employee. Investigators are examining whether the shooting may have resulted from a road-rage confrontation, although the circumstances leading up to the incident have not been officially established.

Police secured the area as investigators examined the vehicle and surrounding roadway for evidence. The investigation forced the closure of the bridge's westbound upper level, causing significant traffic delays for motorists traveling between New York and New Jersey.

The George Washington Bridge, one of the busiest crossings in the region, connects Manhattan with Fort Lee, New Jersey, and serves thousands of commuters daily.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the fatal shooting. No confirmed information about a suspect or arrest was available in the reports reviewed.

The investigation remains ongoing.
