BLACK SEA SHOCK: Israel-Linked Container Ship Sinks After Three Explosive Sea Drones Strike Off Bulgaria
A Liberian-flagged container ship traveling from Haifa, Israel, to Romania sank in the Black Sea after being struck by three explosive maritime drones off Bulgaria’s coast on Wednesday. The vessel, identified as the Contship Jet, was reportedly carrying 421 containers when the attack occurred approximately 21 nautical miles from the Bulgarian coastline. All 18 crew members survived the incident, including 14 Filipinos and four Ukrainians, who were rescued without reported injuries. The sinking highlights the growing risks facing commercial shipping in a region where maritime infrastructure and civilian vessels have been exposed to the effects of the Russia-Ukraine war. However, authorities have not confirmed who was responsible for the attack, leaving a central question about the incident unresolved.
The attack also comes amid a broader pattern of reported assaults on commercial vessels across the Black Sea. According to maritime intelligence firm Windward, 93 attacks on commercial shipping were verified between January and August 2026, with 53 attributed to Ukraine and 40 to Russia. Those figures illustrate the scale of the reported maritime security threat, although they do not establish who carried out the strike against the Contship Jet. The vessel’s sinking raises concerns about the safety of international shipping routes connecting Israeli ports with destinations across the Black Sea, as well as the potential consequences of attacks involving explosive unmanned vessels. Investigators will need to establish the origin of the drones, identify those responsible and determine the full circumstances surrounding the sinking. Until that evidence becomes available, responsibility for the attack remains unconfirmed.
