Ice continues to accumulate along the Hudson River near New York City as a recent cold snap and sub-freezing temperatures follow a heavy snowstorm. Large ice floes have formed across the river, forcing ferries and other vessels to navigate cautiously through hazardous conditions.  

Video footage shows the Staten Island Ferry and other commuter boats slowly pushing through the thick ice, a sight that evokes images of 19th-century “ice harvests.” Such conditions are rare today, as the Hudson River has not fully frozen since 1934, largely due to urban heat effects and ongoing climate trends.  

The ice accumulation has temporarily disrupted ferry services, prompting operators to implement safety measures and slow navigation schedules. Officials advise passengers to monitor service alerts and exercise caution while traveling, noting that while no major incidents have occurred, ice floes present significant operational challenges.  

Maritime experts note that events like these highlight the persistent impact of winter storms on urban waterways, demonstrating both the resilience and vulnerability of city infrastructure in extreme weather conditions.
