A powerful polar vortex has plunged New York and New Jersey into a dangerous deep freeze following a major winter storm that blanketed the region with heavy snow. While the main snowstorm has moved out, light snow showers are expected to continue across New York into the night, creating hazardous conditions on untreated roads as cleanup efforts remain underway.
The January 25–26, 2026 winter event dumped up to 18 inches of snow across parts of the state, overwhelming infrastructure and straining emergency services. Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution and give snow plows ample space to operate, warning that residual snow and ice could lead to slippery travel conditions even after snowfall tapers off.
The most serious threat now comes from extreme cold, as wind chills are forecast to plunge to between minus 10 and minus 24 degrees Fahrenheit across Western New York, the Finger Lakes, and the Southern Tier through tonight and into tomorrow. Officials are urging residents to bundle up, limit time outdoors, and check on vulnerable individuals as the bitter cold sets in.
The prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures and heavy snow has already had deadly consequences. Reports indicate that seven deaths in New York City have been linked to the storm’s severe cold and snow accumulation, underscoring the life-threatening nature of the conditions. Emergency officials continue to stress the importance of preparedness, caution, and community awareness as the region navigates the dangerous post-storm phase of this winter event.
