Video recorded from inside a vehicle shows near-zero visibility as a driver travels through an intense lake-effect snow band in Hannibal, New York. The footage captures snow-covered roads, powerful wind gusts, and rapidly swirling snow, underscoring the dangerous conditions motorists faced during the storm.
The clip was recorded amid a prolonged lake-effect snow event impacting Upstate New York since late December 2025. Cold Arctic air moving across the relatively warm waters of Lake Ontario fueled narrow but intense snow bands, producing sudden whiteout conditions and rapidly deteriorating road safety.
Meteorologists note that lake-effect snow squalls can drop several inches of snow per hour, with visibility falling to less than 100 feet and winds strong enough to blow snow across roadways, making travel extremely hazardous. Such conditions often develop with little warning and can vary dramatically over short distances.
Local authorities have repeatedly urged drivers to avoid unnecessary travel during lake-effect events, warning that whiteout conditions are a leading cause of winter roadway accidents in the region.
